What is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a medical treatment that delivers iron directly to your bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) drip. This allows your body to absorb iron more effectively and much faster during a single infusion than taking iron tablets every day for months. Many people choose this option at our iron infusion clinic for quicker and more reliable results.

Why would I need an iron infusion?

Iron plays a key role in helping your body produce red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your tissues and organs. When iron is low, your body can’t transport oxygen as efficiently, which can leave you feeling tired, short of breath, or low in energy. Iron is also needed for basic cell function and energy production. In some cases, like during pregnancy, after surgery, or if your iron levels drop too low; your body might need a faster boost than tablets can provide. That’s where iron infusions come in. They offer a safe and effective way to quickly restore iron levels and help you feel better, faster.

More about Iron Infusions

What is iron and why do we need it?

Iron is an essential mineral needed to produce haemoglobin, which helps red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. Low iron can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, causing tiredness, weakness and reduced immunity.

How do we get the iron our bodies need?

Iron comes from diet and/or supplements. Red meat, poultry, and fish contain easily absorbed iron. Foods like spinach, beans, and lentils also contain iron but are less easily absorbed. If your diet or absorption is insufficient, you may need iron tablets or an IV infusion.

Infusions are often recommended if tablets cause side effects or take too long to work.

What happens if we do not get enough iron?

Low iron affects oxygen delivery in the body. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, headaches, and shortness of breath. Untreated iron deficiency can progress to anaemia and impact heart and immune function.

What is iron infusion therapy?

Iron infusion therapy delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through an IV drip. This bypasses digestion for faster, more effective absorption than tablets and helps restore iron levels more quickly.

How do I know if I need an iron infusion?

Blood tests are required to confirm iron deficiency. If you have symptoms such as low energy, breathlessness, dizziness, or pale skin, your doctor may recommend testing and possibly an infusion.

How do I get an iron infusion?

  1. Consultation with a doctor
  2. Blood tests to check iron levels
  3. Prescription for IV iron if needed
  4. Infusion — usually 30 minutes to a few hours
  5. Monitoring by a doctor during and after
  6. Follow-up blood tests to confirm improvement

Will I only need one iron infusion?

Most patients only need one infusion, depending on how low their levels are and the cause of their deficiency.

What type of iron does IV Medical Care use?

We offer two clinically proven IV iron treatments:

  • Monofer — usually 30–60 minutes
  • Cosmofer — usually 2–3 hours

Our doctor will recommend the right option based on your health and iron needs.

What are the benefits vs. oral iron?

  • Works faster
  • Better absorption
  • No constipation
  • Gentler on the stomach

What are the side effects?

Most patients tolerate infusions very well. Some may have mild nausea, headache, or flushing. Rare allergic reactions can occur, which is why all infusions are doctor-supervised for safety.
